CELEBRATING RECONCILIATION

In Advent when we prepare for the feast of Christmas and during Lent when we prepare for the feast of Easter, our students are given the opportunity to celebrate the sacrament of Reconciliation. The word celebration is key because this sacrament is about celebrating God’s love and forgiveness. The students learn that when we fail to love, we call that a sin. Jesus called us to love in three important relationships in our lives; our relationship to God, our relationship to others, and our relationship to ourselves. All unloving choices and actions are a refusal to love and therefore a refusal of God since God IS love itself. Three requirements are necessary for a choice or action to be sinful. First the person must know it is wrong. Secondly they must intend to do it. Thirdly they must act and do it. There is a big difference between an accident and doing something on purpose. You may still want to apologize but it is not a sin. Sin breaks our connection to the three important relationships in our lives. During the celebration our students listen to a scripture reading and spiritual message, are led through an examination of conscience, say together a prayer of contrition (sorrow) and prayerfully wait in silence to take their turn to speak with Father. They are always free NOT to go. As Catholics we believe that God can forgive without going to a priest. But many people appreciate the priest acting in the name of Jesus and the ritual of extended hands in prayer over the one who has just expressed sorrow and regret for their sinfulness. They hear the words and experience as many students have expressed a “big weight lifted off my shoulders.”
